Rust Planters Guide

Planters hold your crops and their soil. The large planter box is the workhorse for genetics: it holds up to 9 plants in a grid, which is exactly what you need to surround a centre plant with donors for crossbreeding.

Planter types

Small planters hold a single plant and are handy for isolating a genome you do not want crossbred. The large planter box holds up to 9 plants and is the standard choice for breeding and production. Whatever you use, keep the soil watered and lit.

Layout and adjacency

Crossbreeding only happens between plants that are close enough to touch (within about 1.5 units), so in a packed large planter each plant influences its neighbours. Put the plant you want to improve in the centre and its best donors around it. Conversely, if you want to protect a genome, isolate it so nothing crossbreeds into it.

Never leave an empty slot next to a plant you care about — an empty gene is dominant and will spread. Model any arrangement with the live crossbreeding planter to see the outcome before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many plants fit in a large planter in Rust?

Up to 9 plants, arranged in a grid — ideal for surrounding a centre plant with donors for crossbreeding.

Do plants in different planters crossbreed?

Only plants close enough to touch crossbreed, and the game checks plants in the same planter. Keep genomes you want to protect in a separate, isolated planter.
